Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering is a fun and rewarding way to help us make a difference. Your time and talent is valuable in helping to support our fundraising work.

We’re on the lookout for helpful and reliable volunteers to assist with a wide range of volunteer opportunities.

All volunteers helping the Charity must first register with us before carrying out any volunteering activity. If you have not already done so, please register online.

Whether store collections, helping out at our events, or assisting in our charity office, there are many ways that you can get involved. Our current volunteer opportunities are listed below:


Great Manchester Run

Type(s) of roles available: Marshals, Food & Beverage distribution

Where:  Manchester City Centre

When: 26th September 2021

Time:  From or Between 8.30am to 4pm

*Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours within the above time

Skills Required:  Welcoming smiles, cheery outlook and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  18+

Number of volunteers required: 10+

Details: Be part of the largest 10k race in Europe! Taking in some true Manchester landmarks, the flat route and buzzing atmosphere makes this a great event for runners to smash their PB’s, and for the crowd to cheer them on!

This year will also see the return of the famous Blue Wave, with hundred’s of #TeamMFT NHS workers completing the route in celebration of our NHS here in Manchester!

“We need volunteers to help make this event as much fun as possible for our participants and their families.   The following roles are available:

  • Setting up / packing down our cheer point
  • Handing out water / snacks
  • Cheering Squad –help to make participants feel like they’ve won Olympic Gold as they cross the finish line

All volunteers will be sent a brief specific to their role before the event.

Travel:  Volunteers are responsible for making their own way to and from the event.

Manchester Marathon

Type(s) of roles available: Marshals, Food & Beverage distribution

Where:  Manchester City Centre

When: 10th October 2021

Time:  From or Between 8.30am – 4pm

*Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours within the above time

Skills Required:  Welcoming smiles, cheery outlook and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  18+

Number of volunteers required: 4 – 10

Details: The fastest, flattest Marathon in Europe is back for 2021! We will need assistance with setting up and packing down our cheer point, and to distribute water and other goodies.

We Love Our NHS 10k

Type(s) of roles available: Marshals, Food & Beverage distribution

Where:  Heaton Park, M25 2SW

When: 31st October 2021

Time:  From 8.30am to 1.30pm

*Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours within the above time

Skills Required: Welcoming smiles, cheery outlook and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  18+

Number of volunteers required: 2 – 6

Details: Our second event in partnership with the Running Bee Foundation. This event is fundraising for our parent charity Manchester Foundation Trust Charity, that fundraises for our family of NHS hospitals in Greater Manchester (including Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital).

Humphrey’s Lantern Walk – various roles

Where:  Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester   M25 2SW

When: Saturday 13th November 2021

Time:  Between 1pm and 5pm

Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours within the above time

Skills Required:  Welcoming smiles, cheery outlook and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  Some of the opportunities for this event are not suitable for volunteers under 18 years of age.

Number of volunteers required: 30

Details: Our annual event when our mascot Humphrey Bear is joined by 100s of children for our Lantern Walk to raise funds for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

We need volunteers to help make this event as much fun as possible for our participants and their families.   The following roles are available:

  • Registration desk / meet and greet – a friendly face to say hello and welcome our participants
  • Marshalls – friendly faces along the route of the course showing the way
  • Finish Line Cheering Squad –help to make participants feel like they’ve won Olympic Gold as they cross the finish line

All volunteers will be sent a brief specific to their role before the event.

Volunteers are responsible for making their own way to and from the event. Heaton Park is easily accessible by buses and Metrolink.

Forever in our Hearts Walk

Where:  Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester   M25 2SW

When: Saturday 13th November 2020

Time:  Between 10pm and 1pm

Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours within the above time

Skills Required:  Welcoming smiles and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  All volunteers for this event must be 18 years or older.

Number of volunteers required: 20

Details: Our sponsored walk for those who wish to support our family of hospitals in memory of a loved one.

The following roles are available:

  • Registration desk / meet and greet – a friendly face to say hello and welcome our participants
  • Marshalls – friendly faces along the route of the course showing the way

All volunteers will be sent a brief specific to their role before the event.

Christmas Carols in the City

Type(s) of roles available: Marshals, Food & Beverage distribution, Supporter Engagement

Where:  Manchester Cathedral, Victoria St, Manchester M3 1SX

When: Tuesday 14th December 2021

Time:  From 4pm to 9pm

*Minimum volunteering time:  We ask all volunteers to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours within the above time

Skills Required: Welcoming smiles, cheery outlook and ready to encourage participants.

Age Restriction?  18+

Number of volunteers required: 6 – 10

Details: Carols in the City is our flagship Christmas event, welcoming 900 supporters to Manchester Cathedral for an evening of music, readings, and Christmas cheer.

We need volunteers to help make this event as much fun as possible for our participants and their families. The following roles are available:

  • Marshalling, welcoming guests to the venue and showing them where to go
  • Serving mince pies and drinks
  • Assisting the Event team as needed

All volunteers will be sent a brief specific to their role before the event.

Travel: Volunteers are responsible for making their own way to and from the event. Manchester Cathedral is easily accessible by public transport.
