Volunteer Code of Conduct
By registering as a volunteer, you’re agreeing to the following:
About volunteering
Volunteering with us is flexible, unpaid, and activity-based, usually supporting fundraising activities and events.
You must be aged 16 or over to volunteer. If you’re aged 16–17, you’ll need permission from your parent or guardian. Some roles may be limited to those aged 18 or over.
You’re free to choose which opportunities you’d like to express interest in. However, taking part in specific activities isn’t guaranteed and will depend on things like suitability, availability, and overall interest.
Volunteering with us isn’t a contract of employment, and either you or the Charity can end your involvement at any time.
Our commitment to you
We will:
- Provide clear information about each role and appropriate supervision
- Offer a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment
- Give you the briefings and guidance you need
- Ensure you’re covered by insurance while volunteering
- Treat you with respect and fairness
Your responsibilities
We ask that you:
- Attend as agreed, or let us know as early as possible if you can’t
- Follow instructions and safety guidance at all times
- Act responsibly and treat others with respect
- Represent the Charity in a positive way
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
Breaches of confidentiality may be treated as a serious matter.
Opportunities and participation
Opportunities will be shared by email and/or e-newsletter and you can express interest in activities that suit you.
If places are limited, roles will be allocated based on factors like suitability and, in some cases, registration order.
Conduct
While volunteering, you should:
- Follow health and safety guidance at all times
- Act in a respectful, inclusive, and safe way
You must not:
- Behave in a discriminatory, offensive, or threatening manner
- Engage in dishonest or illegal behaviour including theft or misuse of charity funds or resources
- Act in a way that could put the safety of yourself or others at risk
- Deliberately damage or misuse Charity or Trust property
- Share confidential or sensitive information at any time
Breaches of this Code of Conduct may result in removal from an activity, suspension from volunteering, or ending your involvement with the Charity.
Social media
If you choose to post about your volunteering, please do so responsibly. Do not share photos, videos, or any information about patients, staff, or supporters without permission. If you are ever unsure whether to post something, ask us first.
Expenses
You may choose to claim out-of-pocket expenses (dated receipts required) for the following:
- Public transport or parking: up to £5 per day
- Food (for voluntary activities over 5 hours): up to £5 per day
If issues arise
If you have any concerns before or during an activity, please raise them as early as possible with your Volunteer Supervisor. This includes reporting any safety, wellbeing or safeguarding concerns.
Concerns may be managed in line with the Charity’s problem-solving procedure.
Declaration
By completing your registration, you confirm that you’ve read and agree to this Code of Conduct.
