'Tis the Season for Christmas Carols

Congregation singing
Monday 13th November 2017

On Thursday 21st December Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity will be hosting its annual ‘Christmas Carols in the City’ at Manchester Cathedral.

The event, hosted by Cold Feet star John Thomson, will be a Christmassy affair with traditional and contemporary readings from supporters of the Charity including Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh, as well as representatives from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

There will be choral performances from the choirs of Manchester High School for Girls, Manchester Grammar School and Parrs Wood High School.  Guests will be encouraged to join in congregational numbers and set the scene for Christmas.

All money raised from the event will go towards the charity’s ‘One Big Wish’ Christmas Appeal to raise funds to help purchase the gift of ten 3D Pain Distraction Unit to ease patients’ fears and take their minds off the medical procedures they can dread.

At first glance, these state-of-the-art Units look just like giant TVs, but they’re actually so much more special. They project a series of interactive 3D images and games that children can control and enjoy whilst they undergo medical treatment. Wearing special 3D glasses, the child becomes completely immersed in a colourful world of virtual reality that distracts them from pain and blocks out the frightening sights and sounds of the treatment room.

Jessica Ruth, Events Manager at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity said:

“We are really excited about this year’s Christmas carol concert; it is always one of the highlights of our year when all our supporters get together to really get in the festive spirit! This year all money raised will go towards a really important project – to purchase specialist equipment to help make the hospital environment less scary for poorly patients treated there. Visiting hospital can be a daunting experience but the pain distraction units really help to ease our patients fears and take their minds off the medical procedures they dread.

“Manchester Cathedral is such a breath-taking venue and our event promises to be a really special night.  The concert is for all ages so we are encouraging people to bring the whole family along. Tickets are on sale now and are selling fast so book early to avoid disappointment!”

Tickets cost £12 for adults, £6 for concessions and £32 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children).

Doors open at 7pm and the concert will finish at 9.30pm.
