Wythenshawe Hospital
Wythenshawe Hospital was built in 1952 and is a major acute teaching hospital providing both district general and specialist services for the people of South Manchester and beyond.
Our hospital is recognised as a centre of clinical excellence and is home to the co-located North West Heart Centre and North West Lung Centre – both leading centres in their respective fields. It is also one of only five adult centres in the UK to provide ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a cutting-edge technique that fully takes over a critically ill patient’s heart and lung function, allowing their organs to recover.
Wythenshawe Hospital is also home to the Manchester Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns, which provides specialist care for the whole of Greater Manchester and beyond, and the purpose-built Nightingale Centre for breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
Our hospital is also recognised regionally and nationally for the quality of its teaching, research and development. Major research programmes focus on clinical and academic strengths in cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular, wound management and medical education.
